Black history month

This week, we have been learning about Mary Seacole. We believe that teaching history in a fun and engaging way is essential for sparking curiosity in our young learners. As part of our Black History Month celebrations, the children were introduced to the remarkable story of Mary Seacole, a nurse who made a significant impact during the Crimean War.

We shared Mary Seacole’s incredible life with the children in a simple, child-friendly way. She was a brave nurse who traveled from Jamaica to help soldiers during the war, never letting obstacles stop her from helping others. We showed the children a picture of Mary Seacole and explained how she made a difference by caring for people when they needed her most. Her story of courage, determination, and kindness helped the children understand that anyone, no matter where they come from, can make the world a better place.

To bring Mary Seacole’s story to life, we invited the children to paint their very own portraits of her. It was wonderful to see how engaged they were. This activity wasn’t just about painting; it was about celebrating diversity, courage, and the importance of helping others.

After the painting session, we gathered in a circle to share what we learned. The children were excited to talk about their colorful portraits, and we had some lovely conversations about being brave, helping friends, and doing good things, just like Mary Seacole did.

We are so proud of our nursery children and their enthusiasm for learning about important historical figures.
