Science trip

We wanted to thank the parents and carers who supported on our year group trip to the South London Botanical Institute.

This was a very interesting experience for many of our children who had the opportunity to observe edible plants using a microscope! The children had opportunities to explore an exciting variety of food plants in the beautiful botanical garden, and they developed a better understanding of parts of plants which are edible.

Best Black Briton

For Black History Month, year 3s got to know about Mary Phillip. Mary Phillip is a retired English footballer who made history in women’s football.  She played as a defender for the England national team and became the first Black woman to captain the national team. Mary played for clubs like Millwall Lionesses, Arsenal, and Charlton Athletic. During her career, she won five Women’s Premier Leagues and seven FA Cups. Did you know that she was born and raised here in Peckham? What an inspirational individual to learn about!

To show what we learned about Mary Phillip, we created a display board for our school’s Best Black Briton competition. Have a look at our board below.

Emotion Explorers

Year 3s had interesting sessions across the term with Rebecca, Dilshad and Charlotte from Groundwork London. We hope you had the chance to look through the folders they brought home before the half-term break. They discussed the different Zones of Regulation and were able to develop some strategies to manage the different emotions they experience throughout the day. The children were taught how to get into the Green zone or stay in the Green zone through Positive Self-Talk (where we say kind and positive things to ourselves, such as “I am kind”, “I try really hard with my school work”, “I am a good friend”), doing a Body Scan, and thinking about what makes us happy!
We will continue to build on the work done during Emotion Explorers throughout the year.

This week in Year 5

This week the children in year 5 have started learning about the First World War, looking at the causes of the conflict and understanding the differences between countries in 1914 and now.

Also this week Calipso children have started to study fractions in Math, finding equivalent fractions is a key skill that relies on a strong grasp of Timetables, children need to continue to use timetables rockstars to support their learning.

This week the children have been fortunate enough to have Cricket coaches come in and teach them key PE skills, this will be happening every week until Christmas.

Welcome back! We hope you all had a lovely half term holiday. This week, the children have been learning about nocturnal animals and hibernation, through the story of ‘It Was A Cold Dark Night’.

As part of our learning, the children have been practising their cutting skills to make hedgehog pictures and using paint and glitter to make beautiful, sparkly fireworks paintings. The children are continuing to make progress learning their letters and sounds and counting to 20. Here are some pictures of our wonderful learning!

Many thanks for your continuous support!

From the Reception Team

At Oliver Goldsmith Primary School we recognise our moral and statutory responsibility to safeguard and protect children from harm and promote the welfare of all pupils. We endeavor to provide a safe and welcoming environment where children are respected and valued. We are alert to the signs of abuse and neglect and follow our procedures to
ensure that children receive effective support, protection and justice. The procedures contained in this policy apply to all staff, volunteers, visitors and governors. All procedures encompassed by this policy will be followed robustly, rigorously and in a timely manner. The policy takes into account the Keeping Children Safe in Education Guidance (September 2024).

In year 2, we are learning about The Arctic and Antarctica with a focus on penguins.

In class we have been discussing how penguins care for their delicate eggs to protect them from the harsh conditions of Antarctica.

We wanted to give the children the experience of caring for a precious egg and so they have been given a hard boiled egg to care for over the month of November.

It is very important that penguins stay with their egg at all times to stop it dying of cold or breaking on the ice so we will be checking the children have the egg with them in school every day.

If they wish, they can build a nest for their egg to keep it safe and warm!

Any children who’s egg survives until the end of November with their egg in tact will receive a certificate for being a successful penguin parent.

Good luck!

Take a look at our learning in action through pictures! We’ve been having a fantastic time exploring through play, taking turns, counting, working with playdough, enjoying our favourite toys, and building our own dens. In maths, we are continuing to practise counting to 10 and linking quantities to numbers. In literacy, we are focusing on understanding characters’ feelings and the different emotions we experience, as well as learning what we can do when we feel angry or sad. We are also exploring the fascinating world of nocturnal animals, discovering creatures like owls, foxes, hedgehogs, and bats that are active at night, while others prefer to rest during the day.
